Facilities & Instruments:
The MRSEC Facilities Network is a nationwide partnership of NSF supported MRSEC centers designed to provide support to researchers in the broad area of Materials Research in academic, government and industrial laboratories around the world.
MRSEC Facilities Management Workshop
This is the registration page for the MRSEC Facilities Management Workshop, to be held
1:00 PM, Tuesday, November 1, 2011 - 5:00 PM, Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Northwestern University
Evanston, Illinois
Workshop Purpose:
The aim of this workshop is "to bring the managers of existing and emerging multi user/shared facilities together, to present and share information about operating exemplary analytical, cleanroom, synthesis and other facilities for hands on research and characterization in Materials Science. A further goal is to promote and enhance the professional development of the Staff Scientists and Development Engineers who manage and operate these facilities."
The workshop will be geared primarily towards the facility managers, specifically about on-the-ground issues: keeping the facility funded day-to-day, keeping instruments operational and users trained, incorporating new technologies into the facility, and leveraging additional funding to support NSF funding. MRSEC Directors are welcome to attend if available, as well.
Workshop Format and Pre-planning:
Much of the workshop format will be geared toward round-table discussion, with the majority of speakers selected from among the group to provide short presentations on aspects of their program that are worth sharing with peers. Following your registration, you will be contacted with a short request for more information on certain aspects of your facility for comparison with others, and asked to specify which workshop subjects most interest you. We will also be interested hearing about any specific subjects you would like to have discussed at the workshop, and whether you would like to present your facility's perspective on any of the session topics, or could suggest another speaker.
Costs, Travel, and Lodging:
To minimize attendees' travel time, the workshop will begin at 1 pm on Tuesday to allow morning flights into O'Hare Airport, and continue through all of Wednesday day. Most people should be able to take an evening flight home immediately following the close of the workshop. Food and general workshop costs will be covered by the hosting institutions and the NSF. Most attendees will need their own institutions to cover only travel and lodging costs, and we have timed and located the workshop to keep these costs low. Students and attendees from PREM programs can have their travel and lodging costs covered by the workshop; please indicate this status in the form below.
Information on lodging and ground transportation to and from the workshop is available here
. Please direct all reimbursement/logistical inquiries to

Our charge from NSF is to "Get these people in a room and let them talk." In this spirit we are looking forward to meeting you in November!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Workshop Organizers at mrfn-worshop@mrl.ucsb.edu. Thank you.
