CDCM Shared Experimental Facilities

Welcome to CDCM shared experimental facilities! Our facilities, which are located in the Engineering Education and Research Center (EER), play an essential role in cutting-edge science and engineering research. The facilities provide faculty, students, and researchers access to state-of-art tools and advanced capabilities for material characterization.

CDCM shared experimental facilities have approximately 2,200 ft2 of lab space on the sixth floor of EER (6.630/6/632), and over 1,000 ft2 on the ground floor (0.824/0.825). The facility on the sixth floor is equipped with a rheometer, light scattering system, fume hood, glove box for synthesis, glove boxes for 2D material transfer with UHV chamber as well as many laboratory instruments for chemical synthesis, non-sterile biological work, and measurement of physical properties. The facility on the ground floor equips with a variety of light sources including continuous-wave laser, femtosecond laser, optical parametric amplifier, white light generator, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, as well as closed-cycle cryostat and near-field optical microscope for optical characterization of materials. The facilities offer advanced capabilities such as low-temperature Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, low-temperature magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements, state-of-art time-resolved PL (Tr-PL), photon correlation measurement, two-color pump-probe experiments, photoluminescence excitation (PLE) measurements, light-assisted microwave impedance microscopy (L-MiM), and wavelength-dependent photocurrent measurement or transmission and reflection measurement that can be accomplished by utilizing the broad tunability of the laser systems.

Facility Type:

Instruments

  1. Andor spectrometer

Intelligent and multi-modal spectroscopy platform for Physical and Life science

  2. BI-200SM laser light scattering system

The Bl-200SM Research Goniometer System provides access to all of these studies with an automatic, modular and versatile system. It is a precision instrument designed for exacting scattering measurements. Based on a special turntable with precision ball bearings and stepping motor, the Bl-200SM's modern design, and quality construction guarantee precise measurements due to the wobble-free movement of the detector. It is field proven in hundreds of laboratories. It is ideal for macro-molecular studies and submicron particle sizing.

  3. Cryostation s100 (Fusion) Foundation (NEMA)

The cryostat has low thermal fluctuations and nanometer level vibrations provide a stable measurement environment. Wide temperature ranges with fast cooldowns make the instrument more productive. Closed-cycle operation means no helium is consumed, so users avoid the high costs, uncertain supply, and challenging operation associated with liquid cryogens.

  4. Discovery Hybrid Rheometer

The Discovery Series Hybrid Rheometer (DHR) combines a patented advanced drag cup motor, a second generation magnetic bearing, force rebalance transducer (FRT), and the new patent-pending True Position Sensor (TPS) in a single-head Hybrid rheometer. The DHR has unprecedented performance specification and delivers unsurpassed direct strain control, direct stress control, and normal force measurement accuracy.

  5. Glove Box

    Glove box for synthesis

  6. Glove Boxes

Glove boxes for 2D material transfer with UHV chamber attached.

  7. Harmonic Generator HIRO

HIRO is a harmonic generator that provides high power harmonics radiation at 515 nm, 343 nm, 258 nm, and 206 nm wavelengths.

  8. High Power Femtosecond DPSSL System CARBIDE-40W

CARBIDE is an industrial femtosecond laser combining 40 W output power and 400 μJ pulse energies.

  9. Optical Parametric Amplifiers ORPHEUS-HP-SH-DFG OPA

ORPHEUS‑HP is a collinear optical parametric amplifier of white‑light continuum pumped by PHAROS laser with a tunning range from 190 nm to 16000 nm.

  10. Scanning near-field optical microscope (NeaSNOM)
A scanning near-field optical microscope with 20 nm spatial resolution.
  11. Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors
High-performance single-photon detection, simple and robust cryogenics, best-in-class time-tagging and control electronics.
  12. White Light Generator
